The gothic-style building of Milan Duomo
The Duomo of Milan is a stunning example of Gothic architecture. The architecture of this cathedral is highly influenced by Northern European Churches’ aesthetics like the ones you can find in Germany and France. However, it significantly differs in the style and proportion of carvings in the Italian Gothic architectural style.
Duomo of Milan took six centuries to complete
The Milan Duomo’s construction took more than six centuries to complete. The construction of this cathedral was started in 1386, and the official inauguration of the church took place in 1418. However, the construction wasn’t completed at that time. In fact, it was still going in the XIX century.
The well-known ruler of Milan, Bishop Antonio da Saluzzo started the construction with the idea and financial support to make the building unique in Milan. Therefore, he chose white Candoglia Marble as construction material.
This marble is only available in Lake Maggiore, which is beautiful but delicate. Also, this is the most important reason behind the ongoing work of Milan Duomo for the above six centuries.
The world’s biggest Christian church.
It is said that Milan Duomo is one of the world’s biggest Christian churches. At the same time, it is the biggest Gothic cathedral ever made.
